Fertilizer Pelleting Systems

Fertilizer pelleting is one of the most demanding applications in pellet production. Multi-ingredient recipes, wide moisture variation between materials, and high production rate requirements all have to be managed simultaneously. Getting the blending and feeding system right is what determines whether a fertilizer pellet operation runs efficiently or fights inconsistency every day.

This is an area where 3MT has real project experience — from single mill startups to complete multi-ingredient batch blend systems running at high production rates.

How 3MT Approaches Fertilizer Pelleting

Fertilizer operations rarely work with a single material. Most recipes involve multiple ingredients — each with different bulk densities, flow characteristics, and moisture levels. The challenge isn't just feeding the pellet mill — it's getting the right blend to the mill consistently, batch after batch.

3MT's approach is built around a core principle: where possible, design the system to let the materials work together naturally rather than adding equipment to fight them. When you're blending ingredients with varying moisture levels, proper system design and adequate blending time can allow materials to naturally equalize in moisture through the blending process — reducing the need for additional conditioning equipment upstream.

For materials where moisture ranges are too extreme to manage through blending alone, we'll tell you that honestly upfront.

A Real Fertilizer Project

One of our fertilizer customers came to us with a straightforward need — a single pellet mill line with a reliable feeding system. Their recipe involved 8 ingredients with no existing way to blend them before the mill.

We started by installing a PSM XL feeder and got their single mill line running consistently. The system ran well, made great pellets, and the customer was satisfied.

That's when they came back.

They wanted to scale — a complete 10 bin batch blend line capable of handling their full recipe. The ingredients ranged widely in bulk density, flow characteristics, and moisture content, making consistent blending the central challenge of the project.

We designed a dual ribbon blender system to solve it. While one blender is being loaded and blended — allowing time for moisture equalization between ingredients — the other blender is feeding the pellet mill. Once the active blender empties, they alternate. The result is continuous production without sacrificing blending time or product consistency.

During commissioning we pushed the system to around 6,000 lbs/hr through the pellet mill. The actual limiting factor turned out to be the post-mill assembly which had been designed for 4,000 lbs/hr — so we dialed back to match the downstream capacity. That slower rate actually produced a better overall product for the customer and gave us longer blending cycles. A future upgrade to the post-mill assembly is a straightforward path to unlocking the full system capacity.

Before You Build — Test Your Material

Fertilizer recipes vary widely. Before any system is designed or equipment is specified, 3MT recommends material testing to confirm your specific blend will produce a viable pellet at your target production rate. With multi-ingredient recipes especially, knowing how your combined materials behave under pelletizing conditions protects your investment and eliminates surprises during commissioning.

Already Have a Team — Just Need the Plan?

One of the most common situations 3MT works with is operators who have capable mechanical people already on the floor but need someone to design the system correctly from the start and make sure startup goes smoothly.

If that sounds like your operation 3MT offers consulting and system design services that give your team exactly what they need — a properly engineered layout, equipment specifications, and a clear plan to build from. You bring the labor and mechanical capability, 3MT brings the system design expertise and the feeding equipment.

Once the system is built 3MT's startup and commissioning services make sure everything runs the way it was designed to. Having the right person on site during first production runs catches problems early, gets your team up to speed faster, and protects the investment you've made in the system.

It's a practical and cost effective way for operations with strong internal teams to get a professionally designed system without paying for full turnkey installation.

PSM XL Feeding Pellet Mill

PSM Feeders

The PSM feeder handles the wide variety of materials common in fertilizer recipes — from fine powders to coarser granular ingredients. Its surge hopper design maintains consistent mill loading even when upstream blending cycles create natural variation in material delivery.

Every Fertilizer System Is Different

Ingredient count, moisture variation, production rate targets, and plant layout all shape how a fertilizer pelleting system needs to be built. 3MT designs around your specific recipe and operation — not a standard template.
