Recycling & Plastics Pelleting Systems

Plastic pelleting is one of the most challenging feeding applications in pellet production — and one of the most rewarding to get right. Low density, irregular particle shape, and poor flow characteristics make plastic materials difficult to feed consistently into a pellet mill. In many cases operators are told it simply can't be done.

3MT has done it.

How 3MT Approaches Plastic Pelleting

Plastic materials don't behave like grain or fiber. They don't flow predictably, they bridge easily, and standard feeding equipment isn't designed to handle their characteristics. Getting plastic material into a pellet mill consistently requires custom thinking — not off the shelf solutions.

3MT designs plastic feeding systems around the specific material behavior rather than trying to force the material through equipment it wasn't designed for. That sometimes means custom fabrication, modified components, and solutions that don't exist in any catalog.

A Real Plastic Pelleting Project

One of our customers came to us with a challenging recycling application — pelleting low density plastic clippings sourced from diaper and hygiene product manufacturing. The goal was to keep this material out of landfills by converting it into a usable pellet product.

Before they found 3MT, multiple companies told them it wasn't possible to feed this material into a pellet mill consistently. We disagreed.

The material arrived in bales and required significant size reduction before it could be fed. After shredding the bales down to a manageable size the material went through a granulator to achieve the desired particle size. From the granulator the material was blown directly into our PSM 200 feeder.

That's where the real engineering challenge began.

Low density plastic clippings would not flow through a standard screw configuration into the pellet mill. We upgraded the PSM to a larger screw diameter and converted to a U-trough design with a large fluctuation lid to better handle the material's unpredictable flow behavior. We also fabricated a custom wiper on the feed cone to optimize material delivery into the pellet mill.

The result — consistent feeding at around 1,000 lbs/hr and a material that was heading to a landfill now being converted into a usable pellet product.

What This Means for Your Plastic Pelleting Application

If you've been told your plastic material can't be fed or pelleted consistently, that may be because the equipment being recommended wasn't designed for your specific material. 3MT approaches every plastic application by understanding the material first — particle size, bulk density, flow characteristics — and designing the feeding system around those realities.

Before any equipment is specified or quoted, 3MT recommends material testing to confirm that your specific plastic material can actually produce a viable pellet. There's no point designing a feeding system around a material that won't pellet correctly. Material testing gives you and 3MT the confidence to move forward knowing the process works before any significant investment is made.

Every plastic pelleting application is different. The solutions that work for low density film clippings won't necessarily work for rigid plastic granules or polymer powders. 3MT designs around your specific material — starting with proof that it works.

Already Have a Team — Just Need the Plan?

One of the most common situations 3MT works with is operators who have capable mechanical people already on the floor but need someone to design the system correctly from the start and make sure startup goes smoothly.

If that sounds like your operation 3MT offers consulting and system design services that give your team exactly what they need — a properly engineered layout, equipment specifications, and a clear plan to build from. You bring the labor and mechanical capability, 3MT brings the system design expertise and the feeding equipment.

Once the system is built 3MT's startup and commissioning services make sure everything runs the way it was designed to. Having the right person on site during first production runs catches problems early, gets your team up to speed faster, and protects the investment you've made in the system.

It's a practical and cost effective way for operations with strong internal teams to get a professionally designed system without paying for full turnkey installation.

Every plastics system is different

The solutions that worked for low density diaper and hygiene product clippings won't necessarily work for rigid plastic granules, polymer powders, or film scraps from a different process. Bulk density, particle shape, material composition, and how the plastic was size reduced all affect how a feeding system needs to be designed.

3MT approaches every plastic application as its own engineering challenge — starting with your specific material, understanding how it actually behaves, and designing the feeding system around those realities. If your material hasn't been tested yet that's where we start — before any equipment is specified or quoted.
